Practical Training & Fieldwork Experience
Journalism cannot be mastered from behind a desk. At NIJ, practical fieldwork, ethical source questioning, and investigative research are the bedrock of learning.
From Observation to Published Output
Our proposed 5-step framework trains learners to treat every story with rigor, fairness, and documentary discipline.
Observe
Understand an event, civic issue, or developing story by observing the environment, identifying the human stakes, and noting critical contextual details.
- Attending local civic hearings and press briefings in Chennai
- Identifying unaddressed community issues and public interest stories
- Analyzing visual clues, crowd sentiment, and environmental factors
Research
Gather relevant background information, review archives, access public databases, and verify all available sources before reaching conclusions.
- Filing and utilizing Right to Information (RTI) inquiries
- Scrutinizing municipal records, court orders, and government notices
- Digital verification of claims, dates, and photographic evidence
Report
Develop insightful questions, interview official authorities as well as affected citizens, and collect balanced perspectives on the ground.
- Conducting structured, ethical on-the-record interviews
- Recording quotes accurately and verifying interviewee identity
- Navigating press conferences and asking constructive questions
Create
Write concise, compelling articles using the inverted pyramid model, accompanied by documentary photographs, audio notes, or video clips.
- Crafting strong leads and adhering to editorial style rules
- Capturing decisive-moment news photographs with captions
- Producing multi-platform drafts for print, web, and newsletter channels
Review
Refine the work through self-assessment, peer discussion, and detailed red-pen feedback from experienced senior editors.
- Desk editing for legal clarity, factual accuracy, and neutrality
- Headline optimization and sub-heading structure
- Final portfolio archive ready for media industry submissions
Four Core Practical Formats
How students gain on-ground experience during the course.
On-Ground Field Reporting
Students receive assignments covering real civic events, press conferences, public hearings, and community issues across Chennai neighborhoods. Learners practice identifying sources, taking accurate shorthand notes, recording audio quotes, and verifying facts before publishing.
Guided Sunday Photo Walks
Photography students participate in guided morning shoots in locations such as George Town markets, Mylapore cultural precincts, and coastal fishing hamlets. Instructors provide real-time guidance on exposure, composition, and human-interest street sensitivity.
Self-Assessment Home Projects
Learners work on in-depth feature writing, web research analyses, and informative articles between weekend sessions. This fosters self-reliance, investigative curiosity, and the discipline needed for freelancing or staff journalism.
One-on-One Editorial Critiques
Submitted articles and photo essays are reviewed under editorial desk conditions. Instructors mark up drafts for conciseness, grammar, headline punch, and legal compliance, training students to edit their own work with professional detachment.
